Xiaomi’s Lei Jun Clarifies Car Production Timeline, Sets Sights on Global Top Five

On August 17th, Xiaomi’s Chairman and CEO Lei Jun, along with Group President Lu Weibing and Vice President Wang Xiaoyan, hosted a live stream from Xiaomi’s Turpan summer testing base. During the event, Lei Jun shared key insights about Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions and production progress.

Lei Jun revealed that Xiaomi’s goal for its automotive division is to rank among the top five global car manufacturers, with plans to expand internationally at the right time. When discussing the timeline for Xiaomi’s car development, he noted that taking three years to produce a vehicle is considered average or even slightly slow in the industry, as many manufacturers can achieve this in just two years. He emphasized that Xiaomi’s three-year timeline is a standard pace in the automotive sector, rather than an extraordinary feat.

Last year, competitors attempted to cast doubt on Xiaomi’s car production timeline, suggesting that completing a car in three years was rushed. However, Lei Jun countered that the real surprise lies not in the speed but in the high quality and standards of Xiaomi’s vehicles, a result of significant investment and rigorous development efforts.

In response to claims that Xiaomi’s car production speed is unusually fast, Lei Jun clarified that many companies can produce a car in just two years, so Xiaomi’s timeline is normal, if not slightly slower than average.

In June and July of this year, deliveries of Xiaomi’s SU7 surpassed 10,000 units each month. Lei Jun expects to meet the full-year target of 100,000 vehicles by November, with a final goal of 120,000 units for the year. To achieve this, Xiaomi’s auto factory began adjustments in June to ensure monthly deliveries exceed 10,000 units.
