Xiaomi’s Lei Jun Details Extensive SU7 Testing and Executive Involvement, Setting New Industry Standards

On August 17th, Xiaomi’s Chairman and CEO, Lei Jun, along with Group President Lu Weibing and Vice President Wang Xiaoyan, conducted a live broadcast from Xiaomi’s Turpan summer testing base, shedding light on the company’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards for its vehicles.

Lei Jun emphasized Xiaomi’s unprecedented dedication to testing, noting that the company’s first foray into car manufacturing has been marked by an industry-leading scale of tests. He proudly shared that the Xiaomi SU7 underwent a rigorous 5.4 million kilometers of testing before its market release. The testing process involved 600 vehicles and spanned over 300 cities, with a staggering 70,000 charging piles tested.

In an effort to instill a deep understanding of the product, Lei Jun called upon Xiaomi’s top executives to actively participate in the testing phase. Collectively, the executive team logged 100,000 kilometers on the SU7, while the test vehicles themselves covered approximately 300 kilometers each. Lei Jun reflected on the significance of this initiative, stating that while the task itself wasn’t particularly difficult, it was vital for the executives to immerse themselves in the product development process to ensure the best possible outcome.

Earlier this year, Lei Jun conducted a three-hour live stream, during which he shared his insights on autonomous driving and Xiaomi’s investments in this field. The live stream attracted 39 million viewers and revealed that the SU7 was still undergoing extensive testing. Lei Jun disclosed that the company aims to push the test vehicles to cover 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers, simulating an entire vehicle lifecycle to identify any potential issues. He stated that by the end of the testing phase, the vehicles could accumulate a total of 11 million kilometers—a scale of testing that no traditional automaker has ever attempted.

Xiaomi’s rigorous approach to testing sets a new benchmark in the industry. For comparison, traditional automakers typically conduct regional or national road tests that cover 150,000 to 200,000 kilometers, depending on the company’s requirements.
